Most maps of Girivalam are things you read before the walk, then fold away. This one is built to stay open during it ~ a quiet, uncluttered card that tells you what you're standing in front of, and nothing more. No live map pin trying to guess your position on a road that dips under trees and past ashram walls; no notifications; nothing draining your battery in the background. Just forty-one stops, in order, moving forward exactly when you tell it to.
How it works, and why
Three small design choices sit behind this tool, and they're worth being honest about, because they're the reason it looks this simple.
No GPS, and no invented coordinates. We could have plotted forty-one precise map pins and moved a dot as you walk. We chose not to. GPS signal on this road is patchy under tree cover and close to the hill, and no source we trust gives exact, verified coordinates for many of these smaller shrines and vantage points ~ so a live-tracking dot would sometimes be confidently wrong, which is worse than no dot at all. Instead, the companion works the way pilgrims always have: by landmark and by order, not by coordinate. You confirm each stop as you reach it, which is also, if you think about it, a small act of presence the GPS version wouldn't have asked of you.
Everything loads once, then needs nothing. The moment you open this page, all forty-one stops load into your phone in a single visit ~ text, positions, everything. There's no second request to a server once you're on the road, so a stretch with no signal (there are a few) doesn't stop the tool working. Just open the page once before you leave, ideally over wifi.
It only remembers your place, nothing else. If you close the page or your phone locks, your progress is saved on your own phone alone ~ nothing is sent anywhere. Come back an hour or a day later and it quietly offers to take you back to your last stop.

Do I need internet to use this during the walk?
No, as long as you open the page once before you set out (ideally on wifi or mobile data). Everything the companion needs loads in that one visit, so the rest of the walk needs no connection at all.
Does it track my location?
No. The companion has no GPS and sends nothing to any server. You move it forward yourself, stop by stop, and your progress is saved only on your own phone.
Can I use this on a Pournami full-moon night walk?
Yes ~ if anything it's more useful then, since crowds and chai-stall lights can make it harder to notice the quieter landmarks. Open the page before you leave home so it's ready before the crowds and any patchy signal near the temple.
What if I lose my place or want to start again?
Tap "Start over from Stop 1" at any time. Your saved progress is cleared and the ring resets to the beginning.
