The mountain
Arunachala: the mountain that is fire
Not a hill with a temple on it, but a hill that is itself held to be God ~ the fire element among the five sacred elements, older than the gods who came to worship it.
It takes a while to understand what people mean here when they talk about the mountain. They don't mean a place of pilgrimage, exactly, or a beautiful view, though it is both. They mean that the hill itself is Shiva ~ not a symbol of him, not his dwelling, but his actual form, cooled from an infinite column of fire into something a person can walk around and love.
You don't have to believe that to feel the weight of it. These pages hold the myth, the geology, the great temple at the foot, and the festival of light that once a year turns the whole hill into a beacon ~ drawn from the old texts and told, I hope, without either dryness or exaggeration.
