Once a year, on a night that the whole of Tiruvannamalai bends toward for weeks in advance, a great flame is lit on the very summit of Arunachala, and the hill that is said to be fire cooled into stone is allowed, for a while, to blaze again. This is Karthigai Deepam ~ the festival of the sacred beacon ~ and it is one of the most extraordinary religious sights in all of India. It is also, be warned, one of the most crowded.
What Karthigai Deepam is
Karthigai Deepam falls in the Tamil month of Karthigai, in November or December, on the full-moon day when the moon stands in the Karthigai star. It is an ancient festival ~ alluded to in Tamil literature going back to the Sangam age ~ and at Arunachala it carries a meaning found nowhere else, because here it re-enacts the very legend of the hill. On the appointed evening, atop the summit, a vast cauldron of ghee and camphor is kindled into a towering flame ~ the Maha Deepam, the great light ~ visible for many miles across the plain. In that moment the cooled column of fire that is Arunachala flares back into what the legend says it truly is: the infinite pillar of Shiva's light.
The days before
The great beacon is the climax of a festival that builds over roughly ten days. Through this period the temple holds a continuous round of ceremonies and processions, the deities carried out on their great temple cars (ther) and on a succession of ornate mounts (vahanas) through streets packed with devotees. The town fills steadily, day by day, until by the night of the Deepam it is fuller than at any other time of the year. To be here through the build-up is to watch an entire town give itself over to devotion.
The scale ~ and the honest warning
Now the caution, given plainly because it matters. Karthigai Deepam draws enormous crowds ~ millions of pilgrims converge on Tiruvannamalai for it. Accommodation is booked out months ahead and prices soar; the roads and the town become extremely congested; moving anywhere takes hours; and walking Girivalam on the Deepam night means joining a slow human river of a scale that is hard to imagine until you are in it. For the devout, and for anyone who wants to witness one of the great collective religious events on earth, it is unforgettable and worth every difficulty. But if what you long for is a quiet, contemplative Arunachala, this is precisely the time to stay away ~ and to come a week or two either side instead.
Book accommodation months in advance and confirm the rate. Expect severe congestion and long waits for everything. Carry water, keep your valuables secure in the crowds, agree transport in advance, and be prepared to walk long distances on foot because vehicles simply cannot move. Come for the intensity with your eyes open, and it will reward you.
