Planning a trip to Arunachala

The practical heart of the site ~ how to get here, when to come, where to sleep and eat, and the small things that make a first pilgrimage go smoothly rather than anxiously.

Arunachala hill after rain, a rainbow arching over the sacred mountain at Tiruvannamalai

I remember how much I didn't know before my first visit. Not the big things ~ those you read about anywhere ~ but the small, practical ones nobody quite spells out. Which bus. Whether the ashram would have a room. What to do at nine in the evening when you finally arrive and the town is loud and dark and you have no idea where anything is.

So this section is the guide I wish I'd had: plain, honest, and specific. It won't romanticise the town ~ Tiruvannamalai is a real, working South Indian city, not a retreat ~ but it will get you here prepared, so that more of your attention is free for the mountain, which is the only reason any of us come.
