There is no dramatic way to arrive at Arunachala. No mountain railway, no airport with the hill framed in the window as you descend. You come the ordinary way ~ a few hours on a road from somewhere larger ~ and then, at some unremarkable bend, the hill is simply there on the horizon, and stays there, and you understand why every road in this part of Tamil Nadu seems quietly oriented towards it.
Tiruvannamalai sits inland in the north of Tamil Nadu, well connected by road and rail but with no airport of its own. Almost everyone arrives through one of three gateways: Chennai (the usual one for international visitors), Bangalore, or Pondicherry on the coast. Here is each, honestly.
From Chennai ~ the usual way in
Chennai has the nearest international airport, so this is how most overseas visitors come. The distance is about 185 kilometres, and the journey takes three and a half to four hours by road. You have three real choices.
By bus
Government (TNSTC / SETC) and private buses run frequently from Chennai's Koyambedu bus terminus (CMBT) towards Tiruvannamalai, many continuing to Tiruvannamalai as their destination and others passing through en route to towns further south. Buses are the cheapest option and leave often, so you rarely wait long. The government buses are basic and inexpensive; private operators run more comfortable air-conditioned coaches for a little more. It is the most economical way to come, and for a solo traveller with a light bag, perfectly easy.
By train
Trains run to Tiruvannamalai Junction (station code TNM). It is a smaller station on the Villupuram–Katpadi line, so you may find the timings less frequent than the buses, and some services involve a change at Villupuram. But a train is a gentler way to travel than a bus ~ more room, the option to sleep ~ and if the timing happens to suit you, it is the pleasanter journey. Book ahead through IRCTC or a booking app, especially around full-moon days and festivals.
By taxi
A pre-arranged taxi is the simplest option of all, and the one I'd gently recommend for a first arrival, particularly if you land jet-lagged or after dark. It takes around three to three and a half hours, delivers you to the door of your accommodation rather than to a bus stand you don't know, and removes every small decision at exactly the moment you have least patience for them. It costs considerably more than the bus, of course. Many guesthouses and ashram-area hosts will arrange a reliable driver if you ask in advance ~ often better than picking one at the airport rank.
Whichever way you come from Chennai, try to plan your arrival for daylight on a first visit. Reaching an unfamiliar Indian town after dark, tired, with drivers and touts in full voice, is the single most common way for a first day to begin badly. There is no shame in arriving rested.
From Bangalore
Bangalore (Bengaluru) is roughly 215 kilometres away ~ four to five hours by road, usually approaching Tiruvannamalai from the west via Krishnagiri. It has a major international airport, so it is a sound alternative gateway, especially if flights suit you better than Chennai. Regular buses run the route, and a hired taxi or self-drive is straightforward. The drive is longer than from Chennai but perfectly comfortable.
From Pondicherry and the coast
Pondicherry (Puducherry) is the closest of the three at about 110 kilometres ~ around two and a half hours. If you are already on the Tamil coast, or combining Arunachala with time in Auroville or Pondicherry, this makes a natural and easy overland pairing. Buses connect the two regularly, often via Tindivanam or Villupuram.
Other approaches
Tiruvannamalai is also well linked to Vellore (about 85 km, under two hours ~ useful if you are coming for the Christian Medical College hospital or from the north), and Villupuram, a major rail junction to the south that serves as a connecting point for trains that don't run direct. Coming from further afield in Tamil Nadu ~ Madurai, Trichy, Thanjavur ~ you will generally route through one of these hubs.

Getting from the bus stand or station to your room
However you arrive, the last short hop is by auto-rickshaw. The bus stand and the railway station are both a few minutes from the temple and from the Ramana Nagar area where most guesthouses and the ashrams are. Agree the fare before you climb in ~ a polite, firm settling of the price at the start makes the whole ride friendly, and saves the small awkwardness at the other end. Most visitors heading for the Western-facing side of town are going towards Ramana Nagar or Chengam Road; naming the ashram or your guesthouse is usually enough for any driver.
