Where you stay in Tiruvannamalai shapes the texture of your whole visit ~ not because the rooms differ so much, but because the two ends of town are almost two different places. Near the great temple, in the old town, you are in the thick of it: the noise, the markets, the press of pilgrims, the temple a few minutes' walk away. Out towards the hill, in the area around Sri Ramanasramam known as Ramana Nagar, the pace slows: guesthouses on quiet lanes, cafes where the same faces gather each morning, and the Girivalam road curving away at the foot of the mountain.

Staying in an ashram
The ashrams offer the simplest and most atmospheric accommodation ~ and for many people it is the whole point of coming. Sri Ramanasramam, the ashram that grew around Ramana Maharshi, takes guests who are coming for genuine spiritual reasons. Rooms are basic and clean, meals are included, and you give a donation rather than pay a rate. The catch is that rooms are limited and must be applied for in advance ~ usually two to four weeks ahead ~ through the ashram's official website, stating the purpose of your visit. It is not a hotel and shouldn't be approached as one; it is a working spiritual community that extends hospitality, and staying there means keeping its rhythms and its quiet.
Other ashrams, such as Seshadri Swamigal Ashram nearby, also offer simple accommodation or meals. If a stay inside an ashram matters to you, write ahead early ~ the rooms go, especially in season.
Don't be disheartened if Ramanasramam can't house you ~ many people stay in a guesthouse a few minutes' walk away and simply spend their days at the ashram, which is open to all. You lose very little.
Guesthouses and homestays
This is where most independent travellers land, and for good reason. The lanes of Ramana Nagar, Chengam Road, and the roads near the Girivalam path are full of guesthouses and small homestays ~ simple, clean, inexpensive by Western standards, often family-run. Expect to pay somewhere around five hundred to fifteen hundred rupees a night, more for something nicer or with air-conditioning. Many are unlisted and found by walking, by word of mouth, or by asking in a cafe; others you can book online. For a stay of more than a few days, many will offer a weekly or monthly rate that brings the cost down considerably.

If you would simply like a comfortable, reliable room ~ air-conditioning, hot water, Wi-Fi, a restaurant downstairs ~ Tiruvannamalai has a growing range of hotels. Budget hotels run roughly eight hundred to two thousand rupees a night; more comfortable places with full amenities sit around two and a half to five thousand. They cluster both near the temple and along the approach roads. Nothing here is luxury in the international sense, but a good mid-range hotel is perfectly pleasant, and after a long night walk or a hot day, a reliable shower and a fan you can count on are their own kind of blessing.
Choosing your area
Ramana Nagar and the Girivalam-road side suits most visitors: quieter, greener, close to the ashrams and the Western-friendly cafes, and right at the foot of the hill where the walk begins. The old town, near the Arunachaleswarar temple, puts you in the heart of the devotional bustle ~ steps from the temple, wonderful if that closeness is what you want, but louder and more crowded. If it is your first visit and you value calm, lean towards the hill side. If the temple is your centre of gravity, stay near it.
On an ordinary week you can nearly arrive and choose. But for full-moon (Pournami) nights, and above all for the Karthigai Deepam festival, rooms fill weeks to months ahead and prices climb steeply.
